"Inherently multiplicitous and predisposed to vary, water confounds attempts at fixity. Water’s defining traits are a tendency toward form-shifting, an obsession with gravity, and a material inclination to change. The French modernist poet Francis Ponge describes this condition by saying that “water collapses all the time, constantly sacrifices all form, tends only to humble itself, flattens itself onto ground.”
