Flags and fragility

symbols fluttering in the breeze protecting, shielding, dividing a fragile shout at the mercy of the wind simultaneously loud and vulnerable
The image of the flag as one of simultaneous power and fragility - the image clear and explicit, the material soft and vulnerable

Flags intrigue me, and I am not sure if I quite understand them - flags above buildings, flags in gardens, flags in windows, flags in hands, flags on t-shirts, flags on mugs, flags on cars, flags in cars, flags on cushions, flags on keychains, flags wrapped around shoulders - is it an image of security, of union, of community? An image of pride? Of the nation? The nation reduced to the simple graphics, colours clearly defined, loud.
